Female weevils bore into the palm with its rostrum and lays eggs into the palm. Pests in the larval stage then decimates the palm and can cause damage up to one meter long, eventually killing the palm. The South American palm weevil (SPW) is also a primary vector of disease for a nematode that causes red ring disease, a fatal wilt disease of palms.
